In a Descript transcription, a black waveform in a composition means that there are some words unrecognized by Descript's transcription engine. Descript will make the waveform black and it will treat that segment as silence or unrecognized audio, in your transcription. If you encounter this in a composition, there's a quick and easy fix for it, in this tutorial I show you how to repair the transcription and recognize the words.

This issue in Descript can have various reasons: the quality of the audio or the accent of the speaker or background noise or various voice inflexions that will prevent Descript from recognizing the word properly. If you have a lot of these you can try to add some of the words most commonly ignored in the Transcription Glossary, to help Descript recognize them the next time.
