This is our 78th video documenting our exploration of the model railroading hobby. It is the 19th video for our fourth (HO Scale) layout. In this video, we unbox and test the Paragon 3 Broadway Limited Imports HO scale Pennsylvania RR GG1. It pretty closely matches their Sharknose locomotives.
We have covered a GG1 before when we bought it in N scale, but that was a Kato DC version and we converted it to DCC. It still doesn't have sound because I figured the electric motor in the model would sound a lot like the electric motor in the prototype. And this purchase reveals a slight difference of opinion between Chris and me. I prefer the Tuscan Red paint schemes for PRR while he prefers the Brunswick Green (or DGLE) paint scheme.
This video has a slightly different unboxing in it. I normally get my locomotives from Dibble's Hobbies (as I have mentioned before) but this model is not available through their normal channels any more. Trainworld (www.trainworld.com) buys a lot of items in larger quantities than most places and buys other unsold inventory. In this case, they decided to put some of their unsold Paragon 3 GG1's on sale for what I considered a very good price. Since the BLI GG1 is not available anywhere else, I ordered one from them and this unboxing shows you how the box they shipped it to me in. They packed it well and it arrived in just under a week with no damage.
The BLI GG1 is a very good model. It runs well and sounds good. The only problem I have with it is now I do want to get a proper sound card for the N scale GG1 I have. I was wrong about the motors sounding alike and the other sounds (whistle, bell, radio chatter, etc.) make me want an N scale BLI GG1.
