US Treasury Bills, otherwise known as T-Bills, are short term government issued debt obligations. This means that you are lending money to the US Treasury in return for high interest rates and tax benefits. These bills have maturity dates of one year or less.
For higher net worth individuals, these T-Bills can be great options as large, liquid cash investments still backed by the US government. Additionally, the interest earned is exempt from state and local taxes. Currently, these bills pay between 2.5 and 3% interest and are likely to increase in the near future (as of August 2022).
US Treasury Notes and Bonds also have a coupon component, allowing you to earn additional passive income on your holdings. Therefore, it's important to take note of both the discount price and coupon rates to calculate your expected annualized yield to maturity, often abbreviated as "YTM."
