The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its counterpart, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), have commenced an indefinite nationwide strike today. This decision was made despite an injunction by the National Industrial Court (NIC) in Abuja, which restrained NLC, TUC, and their affiliates from embarking on any industrial action.
The indefinite strike is a protest against the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and others in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, as well as unresolved labour issues in the state. The decision to commence the strike was taken on November 7, with a resolution to declare a nationwide strike by Tuesday, November 14, if their demands were not addressed.
Apart from the assault on the NLC President, other grievances of organised labour include outstanding salary arrears, the unjust declaration of 11,000 workers as ghost employees, unsettled gratuities, non-compliance with the N30,000 minimum wage act, and the declaration of 10,000 pensioners as ghost retirees.
This development reflects the ongoing tensions between the labor unions and the government, with the nationwide strike serving as a collective action to address issues affecting workers' welfare and demand the resolution of longstanding grievances.
