Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Visits Donald Trump After Tariff Spike Threat Triggers Trade War Panic
Days after US President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico once he takes office, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the Republican leader's Mar-a-Lago resort. Reports said that the two leaders had dinner together. Earlier on November 25, Trump wrote on social media that Canada would pay "a very big price" for purportedly failing to control undocumented immigration and drug smuggling across the US border. Trump's tariff threat triggered fears of a global trade war. Inside the United States, outgoing President Joe Biden urged Trump to "reconsider" imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Reports suggest that if Trump indeed decides to go ahead with the proposed tariffs, it could drive up inflation in the United States.
