00:00 Introduction
The Plasencia Alma del Campo was reviewed using the Bespoke Unit Cigar Formula, a quantifiable review matrix. Furthermore, the cigars have been stored in a Boveda acrylic humidor with 69% Boveda packs for a period of three weeks to ensure that they were properly acclimated and ready to be evaluated.
00:50 Cigar Overview
Released in 2017, Alma del Campo means "Soul of the Field" in Spanish. Not much is known about the cigar other than it is a Nicaraguan puro. Therefore, all the tobaccos are cultivated in Nicaragua, but we're not privy to the terroirs or regions.
01:23 Look & Feel
The Alma del Campo has a perfectly straight roll. Its pinch is so firm that it's almost rock hard. There are refined veins and a rich oily sheen. It has a milk chocolate hue on the wrapper and its notes on the foot consist of cacao, moist earth, and zesty acidic leather.
02:06 Prelight
The draw is a little bit tight, but not so much that it can't be loosened by rubbing it or using a lance. It's also rich in flavour with a certain fruitiness that can be likened to black cherry. Otherwise, the dry draw features cacao and moist earth.
02:54 Tasting Notes
The first third features excellent ash and a straight burn line. It delivers notes of anise, coffee beans, and yeasty sourdough. The second third develops a slightly wavy burn line. The transition is slow and begins to reveal itself a the halfway point where it offers aromas of charred bay leaf, rye bread, and espresso. There's a slight increase in body.
The final third's burn line has corrected itself overall. The espresso note has persisted whereas the charred bay leaf now shares a greater resemblance to charred thyme. Meanwhile, the retrohale is quite peppery.
Some moments are more complex than others but the cigar is nuanced overall. However, it remains balanced and produces a smooth mouthfeel. The finish lingers a while and merits a palate cleanser afterwards.
07:41 Burn
Although it starts with a tight draw, gently massaging the cigar has opened it up to produce a good airflow. Its temperature remains cool and the ash backbone is excellent throughout. Any waviness in the burn line tends to correct itself.
08:30 Overall Experience
The Alma del Campo is nicely presented with three bands. The last one allows you to keep ornamentation on the cigar all the way down to the nub. Meanwhile, the box comes with a detachable ashtray, which only adds to the value. A box of 10 will set you back $150.
Finally, it's a versatile cigar that while isn't very beginner-friendly, is a great option for cigar enthusiasts on special occasions.
10:33 Pairings
Make the most of the yeasty flavours by opting for either fresh pretzels or a croissant, depending on whether you want a savoury or sweet accompaniment. It also goes well with a marinated pork filet mignon.
As for beverages, consider pastis, IPA or lager beer, or even a Speyside single malt whisky.
