In many intro MSE courses, we are taught the basic classes of materials: polymers are flexible but weak, metals are tough but rigid, and ceramics are hard but brittle. However, some metals are liquid at room temperature: mechanically weak and as flexible as polymers. How can we reimagine metals as not just hard and rigid but as liquid and adaptable?
In today’s episode, we welcome Dr. Wilson Kong, an expert on liquid metals and thermal interface materials. With him, we attempt to demystify the unique and intriguing properties of liquid metals, from their low viscosity and high surface tension to their reactivity. Specifically, we discuss:
🔹What a liquid metal is and what unique properties they have.
🔹️A comparison between liquid metals and polymers in terms of material property differences and potential applications.
🔹How sustainable recycling practices of liquid metals can be ensured.
🔹Dr. Kong’s impacts, experiences, and takeaways of being a student leader.
🔹And much more!
We hope you enjoy the episode! And as always, let us know what topics you’d like us to cover next!
