Tips on when and how to mow after a renovation.
This is where the real fun begins with lawns...
The renovation and the hard work is over and done with. Within a couple of weeks and seeing the lawn recovering and coming back, you'll see that it is mostly covered and may even further notice that the lawn is getting long in some areas.
When you have some growth going up you'll need to think about cutting it so it starts putting that growth laterally and fill in your other areas. It may feel strange to mow when there is sand and/or soil still exposed and there are some things you need to think about.
If you are mowing with a cylinder mower, you'll want to get the area a quick water so sand and soil doesn't kick up into the blades. Sand in blades will blunted them very quickly and it is something that you should avoid. Mowing at low heights, you will kick up a bit of the surface sand even if it is wet down but at least we want to lessen the damage.
If you are lucky enough to have a "hack" cylinder and a good one, use the hack.. If you are not in this position either look to leaving a few days later (but watch that growth - if it gets too high too quick you'll start producing thatch quickly) or use a rotary mower.
I generally look at mowing 2-3 weeks in and when the ground is at about 60% coverage and up. Areas that are really sandy and there is not much growth I will leave alone.
The first mow is always a bit rough but subsequent mowing gets a lot easier and flowing. I always do a double cut. The first cut with a catcher and the second cut at the same height without the catcher. You'll find the double cut defines your lines and you can fix up any passes lines if you wish. It is a good idea to change up the directions in your second mow but today I just followed the same pattern.
My mowing height was at 5mm on the Swardman which is very low. The lawn I have is TifTuf Couch and is magnificent mowed low.
When the hot weather and high wind I am experiencing at the moment calms down I will put down our new product, Charger, with growth promoters and iron. Charge will promote some surge leaf growth and give a dark deep green. Charger is also excellent for forcing some Winter growth during Winter.
All in all, I'm loving seeing lines again. This lawn is growing quickly at the moment so in a fortnight from now it will really be hitting its strides.
It is going to be a great season.
