(13 Dec 2019) UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has defended his party's policies despite Labour's general election loss.
With 649 of the 650 results declared on Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservatives had 364 seats and the main opposition Labour Party 203.
The victory made Johnson the most electorally successful Conservative leader since Margaret Thatcher.
When Corbyn was asked in an interview if he was responsible for the result, the Labour leader said "I did everything I possibly could to win the election" and that he "had pride" in "all the policies we put forward".
Corbyn also attributed the loss to voters in leave areas opting "for Brexit or Conservative candidates" resulting in Labour not making gains "particularly in the Midlands and Yorkshire" counties of the UK.
When he was pressed about when he would step down as Labour leader, Corbyn said that he would remain in the role "until there has been somebody elected to succeed me".
