(29 Dec 1978) The political disturbances in Iran are making their effects felt in South Africa with the announcement that fresh curbs on petrol consumption may have to be introduced. South Africa receives over 90 per cent of its oil from Iran, being at odds with all other oil exporting countries. A ten per cent price increase for petrol has already been announced in South Africa to take effect from January 1. Direct rationing is ruled out at the moment, but restricted hours for selling petrol and tough speed limits are foreseen. Although coal generates more than 75 per cent of South Africa's energy, crude oil imports are vital to heavy industry, agriculture and transport. South Africa maintains a stockpile of oil in disused mine shafts, but it is feared this will not last long if Iran imposes an oil embargo. There are also fears in Pretoria, that the special relationship with Iran will end if Muslim nationalists gain control.
