The Japanese Sister City Commission of Independence, Missouri sponsors an annual Cherry Blossom Festival to promote intercultural understanding and friendship between Independence and it's sister city of Higashimurayama Japan, a suburb of Tokyo. Proceeds from the event fund student exchange activities and other events the Commission sponsors.
