Are you one of those people that have to please others? Or maybe you need everything to be perfect? In the school of psychotherapy called Transactional Analysis or TA we call these aspects of your personality “drivers”. In this video I’ll explore the 5 personality drivers, explain how they develop, why they hinder autonomy and how to step out of them.

🔵 THE BE PERFECT DRIVER
Lucy is a chartered account, arrives to work early every day, is immaculately presented at all times and sets very hight standards for herself. As an accountant Lucy is in high demand as she has a reputation for producing accurate work, set to high standards and never misses a deadline. It sounds like the ‘be perfect’ driver is great but it’s not. Lucy is overly critical towards her co-workers, she is tense, exhausted and struggles with boundaries.
🔵 THE PLEASE OTHERS DRIVER
Mark manages a small care home for the elderly. Residents and staff think highly of him as he is very empathetic, tolerant and flexible. On his daily rounds of the care home he talks to all residents and staff to check they are happy and have no issues. On the down side Mark likes to gain the approval of others and doesn’t challenge anyone even if they break the care home rules. Mark never says ‘no’, allows people to interrupt him and lacks assertiveness. Mark’s please others driver is rooted in his early experiences.
🔵 THE TRY HARD DRIVER
Tracey is a school teacher, she is enthusiastic, gets involved in the after school activities and is the first to volunteer to run new projects. She is popular with her students and colleagues as she is always willing to help others. On the down side Tracey leaves work incomplete so she can move onto to another, more exciting project. Like all drivers, Tracey’s ‘try hard’ driver is rooted in her early experiences.
🔵 THE BE STRONG DRIVER
Kurt is a police officer and stays calm in situations such as road traffic accidents, arresting criminals and even working on murder cases. On the down side, Kurt really struggles with the emotional impact of policing but never asks for help. As a child he received the parental message ‘To be okay around here you have to be strong’. To break free of his be strong driver Kurt needs to remind himself, ‘It’s okay to show how I feel and be open about what I want’.
🔵 THE HURRY UP DRIVER
Christine is a project manager, she enjoys completing projects in the shortest possible time frame and seeks out the most efficient way to do work. She is know for being enthusiastic and action-oriented and often manages several different projects at a time. On the down side Christine is impatient, gets easily agitated and makes a lot of mistakes. To step out of the hurry up driver Christine needs to remind herself “I’m okay if I take my time’.
