What are a legendary Italian cyclist’s secrets for building custom steel bicycle frames?
In the 9-episode video series “The Man of Steel”, the former Giro and Vuelta winner Giovanni Battaglin unveils the process he and his craftsmen use for building a cyclist’s dream bike.
In episode no. 8, Giovanni explains how the experience as a pro racer influenced his career as a bike manufacturer:
“I started riding when I was 18 and at 20 I became a professional.
It was worth it.
The experience of professional races was important also when later on I dedicated myself to manufacturing bicycles.
My passion for mechanics and for the bike has pushed me to keep studying and researching something new.
Like for instance, the innovation in hill-climb time trials introduced through frames with specific angles that were for sprinting.
I transferred this knowledge to my company, obtaining great results.”
Then, Giovanni gives an insight into the special machinery used inside the workshop:
“Some of the machines that we use for the production of our bikes have been created specifically by a specialized builder.
Many of them were built by Marchetti, a famous brand dedicated exclusively to the production of machines for manufacturing racing frames.
Thanks to these modern tools, our company can now create the perfect steel frame faster and with higher quality.”
The episode also shows how the bottom bracket shell is polished.
It’s a process done for all the frames, and it ensures that the bottom bracket can be installed easily.
Finally, you’ll be able to take a closer look at how the brake mount is made on a disc frame’s chainstay.
Thanks to a special milling machine, the brake mount of a custom Officina Battaglin steel frame is very precise and secure.
