U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a roundtable with various state governors, government officials, and some education workers from around the country on Tuesday to discuss how they can reopen schools safely amid the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic.
During the summit, Trump vowed that he would put pressure on the governors and the schools in the country to reopen in the fall, saying it was “very important for our country." He said that the government wants to get schools open quickly, “beautifully, in the fall” and said that while it’s a horrible disease, “young people do extraordinarily well.”
Trump also praised Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose state is seeing a spike in cases, for doing a “terrific job” and declared that schools will be open soon.
The president touted his administration's handling of the pandemic, saying they “did it right” and with the country reopening, they would stay open and not close again. He remarked on the recent surge of cases, saying they would “put out the fires,” or as he calls them, “embers.”
