Anytime I get more than one question on the same topic I feel like it's time to do a video. If there are more than one viewers experiencing an issue it's likely a lot of people are. This was the first time I was answering a question raised by two viewers, then found out I had the same issue.
A couple of weeks ago I received an e-mail asking if I knew a good way to keep mice away from tractors. Any rodents living near machinery can be a recipe for disaster and they may get hungry in the winter months and start eating wiring harnesses. It can lead to an expensive repair.
Right after I received the first request for information about vermin control, I received a second one. So I started doing some research. The issue got moved up the priority scale last week, when we had an unseasonably warm day in November. I decided to get the zero turn mower out and grind up the leaves in my yard. It wouldn't start, and I soon found out why. It was just after I found the wire that was nearly eaten in two that I saw a good sized rat run out from under the machine. I have the same problem my viewers have.
In doing the research for the video I ran across a product called Fresh Cab. It's supposed to repel mice. I put a post on my Facebook page to see if anyone had any experience with it and Sean, a good friend of mine, replied that he swears by it. I trust Sean because he owns probably at least 15 old tractors and possibly that many old cars and trucks (one of these days I'll go tour his place and do a video) and he uses Fresh Cab to keep rodents away from his stuff. He has a lot to lose with a mouse infestation.
So, I ordered the product off Amazon (a link to what I ordered is above, if you want to order the exact same thing I did, click on it and I get a commission under the Amazon Influencer Program) and it arrived in a couple of days. It was developed by a farmer in North Dakota who was having trouble keeping mice out of her tractor cab. She wanted a biological control that wouldn't harm animals. This product uses a very fragrant (smells like potpourri) mix of plant material and balsam wood or needle oil to make rodents feel "vulnerable", and I guess they don't like to be places where they feel "vulnerable" so they leave. I highly recommend not opening the envelope in your house.
Anyway, I've put Fresh Cab on the zero turn, the boat at my neighbor's house, and two tractors. We'll see how it works. It's probably one of those products that you don't know is working, if there's nothing going on it's doing it's job.
The best method for controlling rodents is a wild cat who hunts for a living. Hopefully Fresh Cab is the second best method.
