For most of us mountain bike riders, we ride for one reason and that’s fun. In recent years there has been a shift away from designing bikes purely for fun. Bikes are getting longer and gaining more and more travel, which is great for the gravity-fed racing scene but that doesn't suit the majority of riders. This is especially the case in Australia where most of our trails are either cross country or intermediate level descents. These kinds of trails really lend themselves to a trail bike that’s efficient and playful. A bike that encourages you to put in that extra pedal stroke to pop off that little feature on the side of the trail. This is exactly what the Marin Rift Zone 27.5 was built for, and that’s why “Made for Fun” is painted right on the frame.
The heart of the Rift Zone 27.5 is the 6061 butted and hydroformed aluminium frame, which is built around 27.5in wheels, which might not be the optimal for the fastest roll-over angle, but oh damn they are the perfect wheel size for fun. The frame has 120mm of rear suspension and 130mm up front, which is the perfect amount of travel to keep things playful while remaining confident on most trail centres across the country. The playful nature is also reflected in the geometry of the bike, its modern but not over the top with a 66-degree head angle and super short 430mm chainstay meaning it offers more than enough stability on the descents but the front end won't be too hard to lift when trying to manual or jump the bike, while the low bottom bracket will have you railing berms with ease.
The Rift Zone 27.5 is available in 3 models. The 1, 2, and the 3. The base-level Marin Rift Zone 1 is the perfect entry-level dual suspension bike, providing a great foundation with air suspension front and rear, a 1x12 drivetrain courtesy of Shimano and Sunrace, as well as tubeless compatible rims and tyres. The frame is readily upgradable to the desirable boost 148 spacing as well as being dropper post-ready, providing room for you to progress with the bike.
The Rift Zone 2 steps things up a notch and is a great option if you prefer not to upgrade as much in the future with more features included straight out of the box. It comes with the dropper and boost 148 axles from the factory. You also get Rockshox Suspension front and rear and a full Shimano Deore 12 speed drivetrain.
The Top of the line Rift Zone 3, offers a package for the more seasoned rider who wants a great value package. Highlights include the highly desirable Marzocchi Z2 forks and Fox DPS shock, along with the Shimano SLX drivetrain. It's the small things that count though and the bike has been included with 4 pot Shimano brakes offering supreme stopping power and the super grippy Maxxis Assegai tyres.
From fast flowy singletrack to all-day adventures and everything in between, the Rift Zone 27.5 was designed to handle it all. Sure the bike will encourage you to push harder, but most importantly is always down for fun.
