STORYLINE:
Funerals were held in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Thursday for victims of recent clashes between Muslims and Christians that killed 13 people.
Families carried coffins into the St Simon monastery as thousands gathered to take part in the religious ceremony.
A relative of a person killed during the clashes described the dead as martyrs.
"I wish that god blesses those martyrs and blesses us all," said Mena Wagih.
140 other people were wounded in the clashes which deepened a sense of chaos as the police and ruling military struggled to maintain order barely a month after a popular uprising ousted long-time leader Hosni Mubarak.
The violence offered a glimpse of what has gone wrong in a one-time police state that now finds itself with less than half of its security forces back to work and a military that does not have enough troops on the ground.
