Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan, two brothers accused of committing financial fraud worth more than Rs 30,000 crore, have been observed enjoying a life of luxury within the confines of Taloja Central Jail, located on the outskirts of Mumbai. The Wadhawan brothers, former promoters of the now-defunct Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited, were apprehended for their involvement in alleged fraudulent activities targeting a group of banks.
However, the media has captured instances where the Wadhawan brothers have organized various outings, claiming them to be medical check-ups at public hospitals in Mumbai. These conspicuous occurrences strongly suggest that the Wadhawan brothers are living a life that starkly contrasts with the typical prison environment.
Once prominent figures in Mumbai's business circles, Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan were witnessed deeply engrossed in discussions related to family and business matters within the parking areas of different Mumbai hospitals. Their actions encompass sharing meals, enjoying coffee, utilizing mobile devices, and tending to paperwork, all transpiring within the hospital parking premises under the supervision of police, ostensibly for medical reasons.
The Wadhawan brothers are central to a criminal conspiracy case and stand accused of defrauding a consortium of 17 banks for a sum of Rs 34,610 crore. Multiple agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate, are investigating the case.
Investigations carried out by India Today TV have divulged the peculiar nature of their outings. On August 7, Kapil Wadhawan left Taloja Prison for KEM Hospital in Mumbai, ostensibly for a mandatory medical examination. There, he convened in the hospital's parking area, meeting with family members and associates and even accessing his personal car.
Following suit, two days later, Dheeraj Wadhawan replicated the identical routine, departing Taloja Prison for JJ Hospital in Mumbai for a comparable 'health check-up'. This seemingly indulgent scenario is facilitated by the presence of police escorts for the Wadhawan brothers, who are also observed being offered refreshments.
In July, Dheeraj Wadhawan's request for interim medical bail was denied by a special court. However, he was granted treatment for a cardiac condition at a private hospital. During this period, the prosecution opposed his bail application, referencing a previous incident in 2021 where he allegedly exploited his bail to sell paintings.
In 2020, the Wadhawan brothers encountered legal issues when they violated the nationwide pandemic lockdown by traveling with a group of 20 people from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar. This move was ostensibly aimed at evading scrutiny in the Yes Bank case. Senior police officer Amitabh Gupta, who served as the principal secretary in the Maharashtra government's home department at that time, granted travel permission to the Wadhawans during the lockdown. Interestingly, the same officer, Gupta, presently holds the position of Additional Director General of Prisons in Maharashtra.
