The Albanese government is set to purchase hundreds of high-tech sea mines in a new $1 billion deal.
The government will also set up a domestic manufacturing facility to make thousands of aquatic lethal weapons.
The Italian-made mines sit on the ocean floor and are triggered by the acoustic signatures of enemy ships.
The deal will also grant defence intellectual rights to produce the mines at a facility in Mulwala in New South Wales.
