On 30 September 1981, 27-year-old Alistair Darling addressed the Labour Party conference in Blackpool. Making the case for nuclear disarmament, the future Chancellor of the Exchequer highlighted the futility of the advice given by the government to British citizens for protection in the event of nuclear war.
It was announced on 30 November 2023 that Alistair Darling has died aged 70. A key player in the formation of the New Labour government led by Tony Blair, Darling was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer under Blair's successor, Gordon Brown. In that role, Darling was tasked with shepherding the British economy through the global financial and economic crisis that followed the 2008 crash. In a statement released on their behalf, Lord Darling's family shared that he had died in "Western General Hospital under the wonderful care of the cancer team".
