On September 1, the Manipur and then the rest of the country, woke up to the news that shocked thousands of people: Manipur was now witnessing drone attacks. Although use of drones are not new in the Manipur crisis, however, so far, drones were only used for surveillance. However, the recent attack in Imphal West has changed the dynamics of the conflict, showing how easily violence can escalate. Manipur Police have attributed the attack to Kuki militants and the CM has called it an act of terrorism. Meanwhile, the Central Government has responded by forming a committee to investigate the use of explosive-carrying drones. The Centre has also approved the use of anti-drone guns in the state.
In this episode of Decoded we discuss how the introduction of drones and new warfare tactics could lead to even more severe violence in Manipur instead of efforts toward peace.
