Got the opportunity to participate as an Expert in a Panel Discussion organized during the opening of the International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research Perspectives at the Bhopal School of Social Sciences (BSSS). I shared my views on various aspects pertaining to the relevance and importance of Multidisciplinary Research in today’s context.
Developing multidisciplinary research perspectives is crucial today because it enables researchers to address complex problems that cannot be fully understood or solved within the confines of a single discipline alone. It brings together experts from different fields to collaborate and integrate their knowledge, methods, and tools. By doing so, they can gain a more comprehensive understanding of a challenge/problem and develop solutions that are more effective and efficient than those that could be achieved by any one discipline in isolation. For instance, in environmental research, multidisciplinary teams might include experts from ecology, geography, economics, and sociology to understand the complex interplay between human behavior and environmental degradation.
In addition to addressing complex problems that exist all around us, multidisciplinary research perspectives can also lead to the development of new research questions and areas of investigation. As researchers from different disciplines work together, they may identify gaps in knowledge or opportunities for new research that would not have been apparent to a single discipline. Thus, multidisciplinary research perspectives are critical for advancing science and technology and addressing the complex challenges facing society today.
I’m happy that the BSSS took the required initiative of organizing this conference while focussing on the intersectionality of various disciplines, and allowed Experts from 4 different disciplines: Technology, Public Policy, Design and Educationist; to share their views on the central theme of multidisciplinarity. And I sincerely hope that more such initiatives are organized by the Institutes aiming to bridge the gaps existing between various streams/disciplines of education, which is also the need of the hour today for addressing the global challenges that we all face.
