Pakistan’s Black community, known as the 'Sheedi' community in the Sindh province, is a prominent feature of contemporary Pakistan. On the ground, the local Black community is vibrant, proud of their heritage, and curious about their place in a global Black community. But, there is a lack of representation, and more worryingly, a history of erasure. This needs to change.
When many South Asians, and Pakistanis in particular want to stand in solidarity with the Black community in America, or even globally, they have to start at home. Anti-Black racism is present in South Asia, and Pakistan’s Black community has been impacted by it. We need to educate ourselves, know and then do better.
