It's now barely a week away from the end of a large debt relief program - the Debt Service Suspension Initiative. If countries chose to take part, their debt service payments were paused, starting from May, 2020. By the 8th of December, the DSSI program had delivered $10.3 Billion in relief to over 40 eligible countries. With the program coming to an end, debt payments resume in a week. The IMF's Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, has warned that not only would low income economies struggle to service their debts, some may even face economic collapse. But does the end of the DSSI spell certain doom for highly indebted economies in sub-Saharan Africa? I explored that some hours ago with Mark Bohlund from REDD Intelligence.
