Hi everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer and today we're taking a look at how the Kuat Grip Ski and Snowboard Carrier fits on the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta. The Kuat Grip is a premium carrier at a premium price but definitely worth it because you have a bunch of fun features. You have integrated locks. This can slide out to make it easier to access. You can get different sizes. We have the four here, four pairs of skis.
You can get larger, six pairs of skis. We have the black version and you can get this in pearl, which is white or gray, as well. To use this carrier, you have these very easy-to-use handles. So you could, even with your larger gloves, hold onto that, push up, or you can use the palm of your hand to flip that up. It stays in the upright position to make it easier to grab your skis and snowboards.
And you have the slide-out feature where you press these clips and just bring it out. So this feature is especially helpful on taller and harder to reach vehicles. So for our Jetta, where it's already close to the ground, plus we have it on the overhang, not as needed but still pretty cool because now that it's slid out you can then just easily grab your skis and snowboards and you're right to hit the slopes. So the grip has these teeth, which is very unique. Now it's great for the skis and snowboards, adds grip, adds cushion.
The downside though, is you can't use this for your fishing rods, which some of the other carriers do. So if you can mount things to the overhang of your crossbars, please do. I have the Rhino Rack 54 inch long crossbars. Most of the time you're gonna have to mount them on the inside to those towers. So this takes up about 28 inches of your crossbar space.
And it doesn't take up much height though, it does sit pretty low profile. So from the roof to top of our carrier, it's gonna be 8 3/4 inches, and you have those rounded top, too. So you're not gonna have as much wind drag or wind noise compared to your taller carrier. So you have lock cores over here on the carrier. You have that lock as well, but they also have lock cores on your clamp. So there's one on each clamp. So three per carrier, six total. I do like the clamps. Once you set the tension, you then just lift that lever up. You can bring this out, take the carrier off and once you're ready to load your carrier up you just bring that strap in, flip that lever down and just like that, you have your ski and snowboard carrier on your crossbars. So again, it takes a little bit of time to set it up the first time, but after that, quick and easy. You can carry more accessories with this on your Jetta. So in our configuration, from the back of the carrier to the tower, we have 20 inches of space. Using the overhang, we have 28 inches of space. If you wanna put a small roof box on here, you can. It's great if you want the best ski and snowboard carrier. Now, if you're just looking for a solid ski and snowboard carrier, and you don't need those extra features and you don't need those extra locks, that's fine too. We have a bunch of options for that as well. There's the more affordable Kuat Switch or the Yakima Fresh Track. Those are solid choices and will get the job done.
