The city of Akron has released police body camera footage from the deadly Thanksgiving night shooting when an officer opened fire and killed 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker during an incident near East Avenue and Vernon Odom Boulevard.
Release of the body camera video comes as the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues looking into the situation. A law passed in 2021 requires the city of Akron to release footage in use-of-force incidents involving the police department within seven days of when it happened.
The footage released Thursday afternoon shows one dash camera angle as well as three different officer body cameras, including the officer who shot Tucker. However, while the muzzle flash of the officer's weapon can be seen, the moments leading up to and during the shooting cannot be heard due to what police describe as "buffering" that muted the audio. Officers can also be heard yelling at Tucker to "put your hands out to your sides" for several minutes following the shooting.
