It was in 1857 that Jean-François Millet first exhibited this masterpiece at the Paris Salon. It was not an instant hit though. The audiences of the Salon did not like it much. Mostly because the subject was not considered suitable for art. Still, Millet sold the painting and some time later it became part of the collection of the Louvre. Today it is in Musée d'Orsay.
