"Psalm 57
1 Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me,
for in you I take refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until the disaster has passed.
2 I cry out to God Most High,
to God, who vindicates me.
3 He sends from heaven and saves me,
rebuking those who hotly pursue me—
God sends forth his love and his faithfulness.
4 I am in the midst of lions;
I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts—
men whose teeth are spears and arrows,
whose tongues are sharp swords.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let your glory be over all the earth.
6 They spread a net for my feet—
I was bowed down in distress.
They dug a pit in my path—
but they have fallen into it themselves.
7 My heart, O God, is steadfast,
my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and make music.
8 Awake, my soul!
Awake, harp and lyre!
I will awaken the dawn.
9 I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will sing of you among the peoples.
10 For great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let your glory be over all the earth.
Explore Psalm 57, a powerful prayer of David seeking God's mercy and protection while praising His steadfast love and faithfulness.
This psalm is attributed to David and is described as a Miktam, which is likely a musical or liturgical term. It was composed when David fled from Saul and took refuge in a cave, possibly referring to either the cave of Adullam or the cave in the wilderness of En-gedi.
The psalm begins with a plea for God's mercy and protection, as David seeks refuge in the "shadow of your wings" (verse 1). Despite being surrounded by enemies, described as lions and ravenous beasts (verse 4), David expresses confidence in God's salvation and faithfulness.
A key theme in this psalm is the exaltation of God. The refrain "Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth" appears twice (verses 5 and 11), emphasizing David's desire for God's glory to be recognized universally.
The psalm also showcases David's unwavering faith and determination to praise God. He declares his heart as steadfast and commits to singing praises to God among the nations (verses 7-9). The psalm concludes by affirming God's great love and faithfulness, which reach to the heavens and skies (verse 10).
Psalm 57 is part of Jewish, Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, and other Protestant liturgies. It's appointed to be read on the morning of the 11th day of the month in the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer and is a Proper Psalm for Mattins on Easter Day.
