If you’re shopping for a new trail bike, it probably hasn’t escaped your attention that there’s a bewildering array of options on the market.

So, as well as being the most popular category of full-suspension bike, it’s also one of the most confusing.

In terms of travel, you’ve got options anywhere between 120 and 150 millimetres at the rear.

You can choose from 29in wheels front and rear, 27.5in wheels front and rear, or a mixed wheel mullet bike with a 29 up front and a 27.5 at the back.

Factor in an almost limitless combination of geometry variables and sizing options and it’s hard to know where to start.
