The first outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Indonesia in 36 years is raising alarm across Asia. As of July 21, 2022, more than 400,000 cows were reported to be infected with the virus that spreads rapidly through livestock populations and is difficult to eradicate. The disease is distinct from a viral infection found in humans, and it is seldom fatal in adult animals. But since outbreaks can be deadly for younger animals and permanently stifle growth and production in herds, mass culls are often ordered to stop foot-and-mouth outbreaks.
