"There were lots of difficulties before. We had to pay high rates of interest to the money lender. Whatever money my husband and son earned by working in cities, we ended up paying it to the money lender so we were left starving again. And now we have enough to eat and live. We are comfortable now."

"After the protest, they (the high-caste landowners and village chief) realised that these labourers would not agree. We remained adamant in our stance, they had to compromise and give us work. But what happened instead was that we only got five days of work instead of 12. The remuneration we should have received in fifteen days, we were given after one and half, two, three months. They were hoping that we would get fed up and leave the work. But we persisted and gradually won the battle. Today, we are getting the promised amount of work."
