The war of the Stray Dog was one of the minor conflicts that nearly erupted into a major war during the 1920's. Poor dog.. You will be missed.

Following its defeat in the first World War, Bulgaria had to cede the land of Western Thrace to the Greeks, Nevertheless, the two regions remained a target of Bulgarian interests throughout the interwar period, and two organizations would launch raids from Bulgarian territory into both Greek and Yugoslavian land, trying to gradually build a public resistance and build Bulgarian support among the populace.

There are two versions of how the incident started.

1) In the first version, was when a Greek soldier ran after his dog, which had strayed across the border from Greece, hence the name. The border was guarded by Bulgarian sentries, and one of them shot the Greek soldier.

2) In the second version, Bulgarian soldiers crossed the Greek border, attacked a Greek outpost at Belasitsa killing a Greek captain and a sentry.

The Bulgarian government apologized for the incident, and wanted to create a joined investigation into the incident, The Greeks however, issued an ultimatum, wanting an apology, prosecution of the men involved, and compensation of 2 million francs to be paid, occupying a border town to enforce these demands. Fighting between the two erupted from this, with Greek troops marching further in-land and the newly formed League of nations stepped in, demanding that Greece retreat from Bulgarian territory, and for the nation to pay 45,000 pounds in compensation for the property damage caused during the invasion. Both nations accepted this but Greece protested, as the League had ruled against them in the Corfu incident in 1923 against Italy. Following this, the Dictator in Greece, Theodoros Pangalos, was overthrown the following summer, by the same military generals that installed him prior, and tension between the two nations settled.. least for a little while.
