This video delves into the little-known yet devastating mental disorder, Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).
BDD is characterised by an individual's overwhelming concern with their physical appearance, leading to social isolation, lack of work and relationships, and an increased risk of depression and suicide.
We will touch on the risk factors for developing BDD, such as genetics, negative life experiences, certain personality traits, societal pressures, and comorbidities.
We will also explore the signs and symptoms of BDD, including a preoccupation with perceived physical flaws, repetitive behaviours like mirror checking and skin picking, and low self-worth.
To help practitioners diagnose BDD, we will cover the DSM criteria for the disorder and discuss how it differs from other conditions like anorexia nervosa.
This guide aims to increase awareness of BDD and support practitioners in identifying and treating this debilitating disorder.
