A day after one of the worst mass shootings in US history, Connecticut's medical examiner said the victims were all shot multiple times, Reuters reports.
H. Wayne Carver said 12 girls, eight boys and six adult women were killed in the school shooting in Newtown by a 20-year-old gunman identified by law enforcement sources as Adam Lanza. Lanza opened fire on Friday morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School and methodically shot his victims before apparently killing himself. Witnesses heard as many as 100 shots being fired. When the carnage was over, 28 people were dead, including the shooter and his mother.
According to reports, Adam Lanza first killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at her home. Armed with a Glock and a SIG Sauer, both handguns favored by law enforcement officers, as well as a military-style Bushmaster .223 M4 carbine rifle, Lanza then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School and forcibly entered the school sometime after 9:30am.
Leaving a shotgun in the trunk of the car, Lanza reportedly shot out the glass in a window or door to enter the school, as all school doors were locked at 9:30am in accordance with a security system recently put in place by school principal Dawn Hochsprung.
After hearing the sound of gunfire, Hochsprung, 47, school psychologist Mary Scherlach, 56, and a vice principal ran from a conference room and into a corridor to investigate. Lanza shot all three. Town officials say Hochsprung died while trying to overtake Lanza. Only the vice principal survived.
Lanza then headed down the hallway toward the first-grade classrooms. Teacher Kaitlin Roig, 29, had hidden students in a bathroom before closing the door to her classroom. For unknown reasons, Lanza passed by her classroom.
Lanza first entered substitute teacher Lauren Rousseau's classroom, where he killed Rousseau, 14 children, and a special education teacher.
Next, he entered teacher Victoria Soto's classroom. Soto, 27, had hidden seven of her students in a classroom closet and tried to divert Lanza. Lanza killed Soto, along with another teacher in the classroom and six students who had attempted to flee. The seven students in the closet survived.
Of the 20 children Lanza killed, 14 were 6 years old and four were 7 years old. The oldest victim was Scherlach, 56.
