The Serbian Empire emerged as a powerful medieval state in the Balkans during the 14th century. Founded by Stefan Uroš IV Dušan, also known as Dušan the Mighty, the Serbian Empire reached its zenith under his rule. Dušan expanded his realm through a series of military campaigns, incorporating territories in the Balkans, including parts of present-day Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, and Greece. The Serbian Empire thrived culturally and politically, with its capital at Skopje becoming a center of artistic and intellectual achievements. However, after Dušan's death in 1355, the empire gradually declined, facing internal struggles and external pressures from the Ottomans, ultimately leading to its disintegration in the late 14th century. Nevertheless, the Serbian Empire's legacy as a medieval powerhouse and a symbol of Serbian identity and aspirations continues to endure.
