The scourge of gender-based violence has left many questioning the role of culture, as an enabling weapon against women. Recently there has been a spike in gender-based violence, across the country. This is a concern for many women in rural areas, as some strongly believe that African culture is exacerbating the problem. In some cultural beliefs, women are encouraged to be tolerant in a marriage, and this has resulted in much-enduring abuses. Our reporter Busisiwe Jemsana-Mantashe speaks to a Cultural Expert Dr Luvuyo Dondolo from Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape.
