The CD4040BC is a 12-stage ripple carry binary counter, while cd4020 and cd4060 are 14 stage ripple carry binary counters. The counters are advanced one count on the negative transition of each clock pulse. The counters are reset to the zero state by a logical “1” at the reset input independent of clock. all counter stages are master stave flip flops. each stage receives its input from its master stage. the trailing edge of each pulse cause to flip the output of the next stage. in this way the each next stage provides divided by 2 frequency in output. so that this circuit is also called frequency divider. its all outputs are buffered.
