The 2024 Tata Steel Chess Masters is the first super tournament of the year. The event starts January 13 at 8 a.m. ET/14:00 CET/6:30 p.m. IST, with some of the strongest players in the world gathering at Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, to play a series of classical games.

FORMAT

- Players compete in a single round-robin of 13 rounds.
- Wins are worth 1 point, and draws are worth 1/2 a point. The player with the most points at the end of the tournament wins.
- The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves. There is also a 30-second increment after each move.

Most rounds of the 2024 Tata Steel Chess Masters will take place at the Dorpshuis De Moriaan in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. As part of the Chess On Tour tradition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, where part of the tournament takes place at a different city in the Netherlands, the ninth round will happen at the AFAS Circustheater Scheveningen in The Hague.

The Tata Steel Chess Tournament has a long and rich history, with its first edition dating back to 1938. The tournament used to be called the Hoogovens Tournament, named after its sponsor, Koninklijke Hoogovens.
