German national champion Maximilian Schachmann was riding towards the finish in the Tour of Lombardy on Saturday when a car driven by a member of the Italian public strayed across his path and forced him to crash.

Despite being in obvious pain, the Bora-Hansgrohe rider quickly got back on his bike and completed the race, eventually finishing seventh.

The accident happened not long after Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel crashed and somersaulted over the side of a bridge on the descent into Como - he was taken to hospital by ambulance and is not thought to be seriously injured.
