Dentists have to perform a wide array of procedures. In some, the shape and biting surface of the tooth have to be altered, or a tooth or teeth have to be added to what’s present in the mouth. In order to regain the proper form and function of what’s being restored, or put back in the mouth, dentists use a bite registration. This shows a dental laboratory exactly where teeth meet when they bite together in a normal closure of the teeth. The laboratory can then create a crown, bridge, implant crown, partial denture, immediate denture, or complete denture when the upper teeth (or edentulous/tooth free) and jaw are related to the lower teeth and jaw (again, with or without teeth). Getting the bite, or occlusion, is the most critical step when it comes to proper function and chewing of whatever will be made for a patient by a dental laboratory. Without a bite registration, a laboratory must guess how teeth meet and function, and that doesn’t work well. The same applies for an inaccurate or improper bite registration if the patient didn’t bite as he or she typically does. The resultant crown, denture, etc. will likely require a lot of adjustments before being functional. This is why this step is so important!
Hey Doc, what’s a Bite Registration?
