Provo City Power smokestacks get taken down in a controlled demolition using explosives. These were constructed about 75 years ago when coal was burned to produce power. Since Provo doesn't burn power, it was decided that the stacks should come down after engineers determined that even a small earthquake could, and probably would cause them to fail and fall. Provo sits along the Wasatch fault, where an earthquake could occur, causing the stacks to fall uncontrollably, causing damage to nearby structures.
