Bangkok’s Old Custom House
Bangkok's Old Customs House, built in 1888 during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, is a historic gem often overlooked by tourists. This neoclassical building was part of King Chulalongkorn's efforts to modernize Siam (now Thailand) by creating European-style government administration and constructing impressive public buildings.
The Customs House played a significant role in the trade of the time, serving as the gateway to Siam for travelers and the point of payment for export and import duties. Notably, rice exports were the primary trade, with teak and other goods also making their mark. British merchants dominated the import trade, which included items like cotton goods and opium, the latter being a lucrative government monopoly.
The Customs House ceased operations in 1949 when port administration moved to Khlong Toei. Over the years, it fell into disrepair and was used by the fire service. However, there are now plans to restore this historic building and transform it into a luxury hotel, preserving its architectural significance.
In recent years, the Treasury Department signed a lease contract with U City, a subsidiary of BTS Group Holdings, for a 30-year lease on the Customs House and its neighboring buildings. U City plans to invest 3 billion baht to renovate these historical structures and create a luxury hotel. Before the renovation, the Fine Arts Department will conduct an archaeological and architectural project to record details for the restoration process.
The luxury riverside hotel is expected to open in 2025, contributing to tourism in Bang Rak district and preserving the rich history of this area. The Customs House and its neighboring buildings, once integral to trade in Siam, will soon be reborn as a modern hub for travelers and history enthusiasts to enjoy.
