During spirometry, the patient is asked to perform various breathing maneuvers, from which a graphical output of the respired volume against time is presented as a curve. This curve is termed a volume-time curve. Two values are measured during this process: the maximum forced expiratory volume of air expired within one second after maximal inspiration, FEV1, and the maximum volume of air forcibly expired after maximal inspiration, the forced vital capacity, in short, FVC.
