Spam burgers, spam omelettes, spam nuggets, spam, spam, spam... why does Asia love its canned cooked pork - its spam? Did it get its name because it's 'spiced ham' or because of its World War 2 popularity as 'Special Army Meat'?
Bernice Chan and Alkira Reinfrank set sail on the history of spam, and delve into its massive popularity in the Philippines, as well as teasing out some of the lesser known legends of the many uses of spam (hint: it involves army boots). You'll also hear how South Korea still loves its spam in the rice and vegetable rolls many years after American soldiers used it as a form of currency during the Korean War, and how Japan, Hong Kong and mainland China also have introduced spam on their menus.
With special guests: Filipino chef Jordy Navarra; consumer behaviour researcher Ayalla Ruvio, assistant professor in the department of marketing at Michigan State University; and chef Chung Chow, co-owner of the Noreetuh restaurant in New York. #scmppodcasts
