seth “FREAKIN” rollins. new year, new name
WWE does it once again. They take something cool and make it lame because they try to force everything upon their audience. It’s official. Seth Rollins’ name has been changed. The number one contender for the Universal Championship is now named Seth “Freakin” Rollins. The change was made at the first PPV of 2022, Day 1. At the show, the commentators constantly referred to him as Seth “Freakin” Rollins to the point where it just got weird. Shortly after that, his name was officially changed on WWE.com. I really don't like it when WWE does this. They take cool things and ruin them within seconds. Here’s a long list of WWE ruining cool names and other things.
Alexander Rusev is a perfect example. For some reason, I feel like his full name was much better. It sounded like a more legit competitor. WWE changed it to Rusev. That wasn’t necessary and I thought it was better off before. Another act that was destroyed by Vince McMahon was fandangoing. At the RAW after WrestleMania 29, the fans in attendance started performing a specific dance during Fandango’s theme song. It was honestly the perfect way for his character to get over with the audience. That was until WWE came in and forced it on the fans practically begging them to do the fandango dance. The company instantly killed it because they made it feel inorganic. Let’s jump back to some other awful name changes.
Michael McGillicutty was one of the worst names I’ve ever heard. WWE really had the opportunity to utilize Joe Hennig. They could have spoken about his dad’s accomplishments and hyped him up like that. Instead, they named him Michael McGillicutty. You already knew he was going to fail on the main roster when he was given that name. Chad Gable became Shorty G for a while. That entire storyline did absolutely nothing for him. It was just a big waste of time. The War Raiders went from a badass name to The Viking Experience. The duo never really recovered since.Matt Riddle lost his first name. The same thing happened to Cesaro.
And Seth Rollins’ is the newest victim to Vince McMahon’s weird obsession with changing names and making them lame and corny. Look, I understand this isn’t a huge deal, but it’s just a little weird. I don’t get why Vince McMahon and the creative team keep taking organic things and simply squeezing all the fun out of it. Seth Rollins’ only sometimes used the ‘freaking’ part. It wasn’t something that we heard every single time. And now, commentators, opponents, and the entire WWE refers to him as that.
It’s annoying and quite frankly, I feel like it ruined the cool nickname. This is one of those overproducing issues that I’ve mentioned in the past. WWE needs to be more relaxed. Not everything needs to be this official. Let things happen organically. Let the audience get over with it without shoving it in their faces. And let the wrestlers naturally develop their characters. The name Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins only just made its debut, but it might be time to retire it.
