The Labour leader will have his chance to grill the prime minister during the weekly questions session in the House of Commons. Today's PMQs comes as the latest figures show the numbers of hospital admissions and coronavirus patients on ventilators in England are the highest since June. The sharp rise in cases in recent weeks has led to warnings from leaders of northern cities that the local lockdown restrictions are “not working”, confusing and even “counter-productive”. The leaders of Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle City Councils – Judith Blake, Sir Richard Leese and Nick Forbes – joined Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson in writing to Health Secretary Matt Hancock to say they are “extremely concerned”. They have called for additional powers to punish those who break rules, for new restrictions to be developed by police, council and public health experts, and for a locally-controlled Test and Trace system. Ministers are also facing pressure to ditch the 10pm curfew for pubs and restaurants, with the government braced for a potential rebellion from backbench Conservatives if it goes to a Commons vote. Twelve Tories rebelled against the PM yesterday when they voted against England’s “rule of six”. But, with Labour abstaining, the regulation was approved by 287 to 17, a majority of 270. She says the Merseyside local lockdown puts 58,000 jobs in what was a booming hospitality sector in the immediate firing line. “Tighter local lockdown restrictions like those imposed on Merseyside should trigger automatic government support for local business support schemes to prevent this economic carnage worsening,” she says. The PM says he shares her feelings about job losses. “It’s wretched we have to do this,” he says. He says support will continue to be provided to the north west. 12:49'Was PM not expecting student to return to university?' Matt Western, MP for Warwick and Leamington, says in his constituency Deloitte will not deliver on their testing facility until the end of the month - four weeks after 7,000 students return. He asks: “Was the government not expecting students to come back to university?” The PM says it’s important students do return to university in the way that they have. He thanks students for the w
