Dick Vitale bringing in Final Four coaches for annual cancer fundraiser event.
Longtime college basketball analyst Dick Vitale made a promise to Tony Colton when the teen was hospitalized last summer.
"I told him, 'I won't stop this fight until my last breath,'" Vitale said in an emotional phone interview Wednesday. Colton, 17, died in August after a long battle with cancer.
Vitale's fight is stopping pediatric cancer. He's been raising funds for cancer research and awareness at his annual gala for more than a decade. Set for May 11 at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota, Fla., Vitale is "very optimistic" that he'll reach his goal to raise a best-ever $3.5 million, which would lift the overall total to $25 million for pediatric cancer research since he started the effort.
