In this episode of Solomon's Vegas Adventures, Solomon went up to Mt. Charleston and hiked Deer Creek- a gorgeous and lush canyon filled with alpine creeks and active, earthquake-producing faults.
Deer Creek is located about 30 minutes from Las Vegas, high up in the Spring Mountains at an elevation of about 8,000 feet. The canyon supports a perennial stream, lots of riparian plants, and many birds and animals.
Geologically, there is a Quaternary Fault known as the La Madre Fault that cuts through the canyon. This fault is associated with Basin & Range Tectonic Deformation, and has recorded activity within the last couple thousand years. Evidence of the fault is clearly seen in the upper reaches of the canyon, with deformed rock layers and actual fault planes visible.
Deer Creek is accessed via the Deer Creek Picnic Area Parking Lot, located about halfway between Kyle Canyon Rd (NV-157) and Lee Canyon Rd (NV-156), right off of NV-158 (Deer Creek Road).
