In the very early French Romantic era, many of the organ lofts in France were out of commission, having been decimated by the French Revolution, hence there seems to be a gap between the French Classical era and César Franck, the father of the French Symphonic school. One wonderful composer in that era is Alexandre Boely who feels to me like a French Mendelssohn.
