In a preservation first we see two Southern Bulleids tackling Shap Bank just nine minutes apart on separate steam excursions. The West Country Class 34046 Braunton was up first, as it hauled the Lakelander from Preston to Carlisle and back down the Cumbrian coast to Carnforth. The class 7 Bulleid can been seen clagging its way through Salterwath and up to Shap Wells. Just nine minutes later the Merchant Navy class 35018 British India Line saunters her way up the bank in less dramatic style with a mere 12 coaches on the hook. I think the plaudits go to Braunton for this one despite the lower speed. We finally catch up with British India Line on the return trip through Waitby and Kirkby Stephen where the big class 8 southerner was wound right back as it stormed up the Long Drag.
We'd of liked to captured 34046 again but it was on the other side of Cumbria and as luck would of have it there was our local Great Western Castle class 7029 returning from York and heading in our direction. We first capture Clun Castle restarting from a signal check at Belper after catching an all stopping service train, I was hoping for something faster but this will more than do ! About a mile further south we see the Castle negotiating the sweeping curve on approach to Duffield just north of Derby. Our final shot of the Castle was at Willington just south of Derby. This topped off a great day with some fantastic action on display and well worth the 395 mile round trip.
I hope you enjoy the video.
